Frequently Asked Questions
What is health and life coaching?
Health coaching centers around improving client health. Life coaching centers on improving any aspect of the client’s life – general life issues, money, career, time management, relationships, and connecting with that which is greater.
What’s the difference between therapy and coaching?
Therapy utilizes assessment, diagnosis and treatment to make changes for clients. Therapy is for recovery. Coaching does not assess, diagnose, treat or prescribe. It uses discovery and curiosity to assist with consistent and lasting habit change.
Does a coach tell me what to do?
A coach will lead the client through some discussions and questions that use curiosity instead of judgement to discover the areas of the client’s life where the client wishes to see change and growth. Together they discover what the desired outcome is, what is holding the client back, and how to obtain inevitable success. Most often, the client directs this process, with the coach acting as a cheerleader and an accountability partner, sharing new information as it is warranted.
What is the difference between dieting and a health coaching program?
Dieting has a narrow focus on food, and mostly what food you cannot eat. Health coaching focuses on health and energy – what makes you feel your very best physically. It also focuses on finding what you can eat and do to maximize your health and physical wellbeing.
Do I have to give up anything?
All coaching protocols that I utilize are centered on what brings improvement. You, the client, determine what brings you success and what causes you harm. If you give up anything, it is because you have discovered for yourself it is not in your best interest to continue with that – not because I tell you that you must give it up. It is always the client’s choice.
When is the right time to hire a coach?
Clients seek a coach for many reasons, but most often it is when they know they need to make changes and just don’t know how or where to find solutions and answers. Often clients have tried many options that are widely available in the public domain with no results, or minimal change that doesn’t continue long term. Coaches assist with identifying what is blocking progress for growth and lasting habit change, and helping clients find information and resources to address issues that are stopping improvement.
How is a coach different from friends?
Friends are extremely important in our social well being, but they do not have specific training and resources to assist with identifying inhibiting habits or attitudes. Certified coaches have completed specialized training with science-backed, curated resources and information. They are professionals in the work of habit change.
Do you take insurance?
No. I do not bill for insurance coverage. However, some insurance covers costs for weight loss. Contact your coverage provider and your primary care medical provider regarding potential reimbursement and coverage.
What do you specialize in?
I work with people who are chronically obese, and those considering or who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, and are feeling helpless, lost, and overwhelmed. I help them understand and implement life plan modifications and habits so they can feel hopeful, empowered and healthy. I also coach on general life, relationships, time management, career, money, and connecting with that which is greater.
Do you provide meal plans?
Together we discuss the client’s current practices, what they have done before, and those outcomes. We use curiosity to identify what provides your body energy and wellness, and then together we find plans that promote those positive outcomes.
How often would I meet with my coach?
Typically, my programs have us meet weekly for 45 minutes. My programs are designed for twelve (12) weeks or 90 days.
Where would I meet with my coach?
I meet with my clients via phone and virtually (such as Messenger, Zoom). We can discuss in-person meetings.
What if I want to end my coaching engagement?
The Client Agreement contains a clause that addresses this. We can discuss this at the time of contracting services.
What about confidentiality?
I maintain total confidentiality of all client information by contract. I would only share if you grant permission in writing.
Do you guarantee results from your life coaching?
As a coach, I assist clients with their desired changes, but only the client can change their life.
Do I need to sign a coaching contract?
I do require a contractual relationship with all clients.
What is your professional background?
I am a certified life and health coach through the Health Coaching Institute. I also have personal life experience with the health issues in my specialty area.
